World Production of Sesame

The world annual average sesame seed production during 2001 - 2016 was 4,375,077 tons from an average area of 8,099,819 ha. This translates to an average per hectare yield of 540 kg during the same period. The Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) in the world area and world production of sesame seed during 2001-2016 periods was 6.43% and 6.62% respectively. During the same period, sesame yield on an average increased by 2.09 percent per annum (Fig 1).

Major Producing Countries

Tanzania is the largest producer of sesame seed in the world, followed by Myanmar, India, China and Sudan. In terms of area, Sudan tops the list and followed by India, Myanmar, Tanzania and Nigeria. The other major producing countries are Nigeria, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Chad and Uganda. The top ten producing countries contribute 85% of the world sesame seed production.

The average area as well as production of sesame seed over the years witnessed impressive in terms of CAGR, especially from the African countries of Ethiopia, Tanzania, Burkina Faso, Nigeria and Chad.

In China, both area as well as production witnessed a negative CAGR of 4.17 and 1.67 percent respectively.

Trading of Sesame Seed

The world on an average imports and exports around 19,70,600 tonnes and 20,72,000 tonnes of sesame seed respectively (2001 - 2016). The annual growth in world's import as well as export of sesame seed during the period 2001 - 2016 is estimated 6.64% and 6.81% respectively.

Major Exporting Countries

India is the largest exporter of sesame seed in the world. India's average annual export during the period 2001-2016 was 260,131 tons, the country occupies 21% share of the total sesame seed export in the world. Sudan and Ethiopia occupies the joint second place and their average export share is 16% during the same period.

Nigeria with 13% share, Myanmar 6%, Burkina Faso and Tanzania with a share of 5% each, China 4%, Paraguay, Guatemala and Pakistan with share of 2% each were the other major exporters of sesame seed.

Annual growth in export of sesame seed from Nigeria was highest with 89%, followed by Burkina Faso at 58.60%, Myanmar at 58.60%, and Tanzania at 50% and Ethiopia at 49%. On the other hand, growth in export from China has been decline by 3.85% during the year 2001-2016.

Major Importing Countries

China is the largest importer of sesame seed in the world, accounting for 27.22% of world's import. On an average, China imports around 327,106 tons of sesame seed every year. The growth in import during the period 2001 - 2016 is 27% annually. Japan is the second largest importer of sesame seed followed by Turkey and Korea. These four countries import almost 55% of the total sesame seed imported in the world.
